bioluminescence (2018) by Liza Lim

Performed by Paula Rae of flute.

Audio – Alistair McLean
Film – Agatha Yim, Polyphonic Pictures
Artistic Director of ELISION Ensemble – Daryl Buckley

In Liza Lim’s program notes for bioluminescence (2018), she writes that this piece ‘explores flickering, shimmering qualities. Bioluminescence is the emission of light by organisms such as fireflies, fungi, algae and many sea creatures.’

This film is part of ELISION Ensemble’s performance series, and features Paula Rae on flute. For those unfamiliar with extended techniques on this instrument, you’ll get a chance to hear multiphonics (playing several tones at the one time), note-bending, flutter tonguing, and others.

For those interested in my ELISION Ensemble collabs, you’d be glad to know that we have another project lined up this year. Pre-production will be underway very soon. Watch this space or follow me on Instagram and Facebook for updates.
