HGRRRSHT for two amplified flutes and throats (2015) by Dobromila Jaskot.  Performed by amazing flautists Paula Rae and Eliza Shephard.  This work was filmed for ELISION Ensemble as part of their Performance Series.

The Performance Notes indicates that:

… the general idea is to create an impression of performing in a rush, hurry, puffing, because of physically too frequent structures with changes, additionally overlapping with two layers: flute and vocal…

Dr Dobrimila Jaskot is a composer, pianist, and educator born in Poland and living in Perth, Australia.  A signature of her composition style is the exploration of timbre through the use of instrumental sound with performers' organic sound side-effects (through vocalisation and physical gestures) in order to create a unique compositional language.  In this piece you can hear moans, gasps, dramatic gestures that both encourage and smother expression.  This piece provides a hearing of the flute timbre in a very different way.

The types of flutes used in this piece include piccolo, alto flute and bass flute.

I really wanted to capture the frenetic energy of this piece and the theatrical and over the top gestures from the performers.  To further heighten the energetic camera work and editing, we opted for a red/warm hue for the lighting.
