‘Hyphen (2002)’ by Evan Johnson

Performed by Peter Neville on crotales. Filmed as part of ELISION Ensemble's performance series.

Audio – Alistair McLean
Film – Agatha Yim, Polyphonic Pictures
Artistic Director – Daryl Buckley

This piece uses crotales, which are small tuned bronze/brass disks. They’re sometimes called “antique cymbals”. I find the sound of this instrument incredibly hypnotic as it lingers ethereally in the air. Here you’ll hear it played with mallets and flicked with the fingers which creates quite an interesting timbre.
